Mix first 6 ingredients in saucepan.

Place over low heat and stir until sugar is dissolved.

Wash down crystals.

Insert thermometer and boil, without stirring, to very firm ball, 256Β°. Remove from heat and add salt.

Pour on slightly oiled platter or marble and let stand only until cool enough to handle. Add vanilla and pull until light colored, starting as soon as possible. Finish in a rope 3/4-inch in diameter.

With a scissors, cut in 1-inch pieces.

Wrap in wax paper.

Use lots of butter on your hands while pulling.
