Combine sugar, syrup, water and salt in 2-quart saucepan. Cook slowly, stirring constantly, until sugar dissolves.

Continue to cook to hard ball stage (260Β°) without stirring. Remove from heat. Stir in butter, flavoring and food coloring. Pour into buttered 15 x 10 x 1-inch pan.

Cool until comfortable to handle. Butter hands, gather taffy into ball and pull. When candy is light colored and gets hard to pull, cut into quarters. Pull each piece into long strand about 1/2 inch thick. With buttered scissors, cut quickly into bite size pieces. Wrap each piece in clear plastic wrap. Makes 1 1/4 pounds of candy.
