Old Fashioned Banana Pudding

In a double boiler, combine 3/4 cup sugar, flour and salt; Stir in milk and beaten egg yolks; mix well.
Cook over boiling water, stirring until thickened.
Remove from heat; add vanilla and set aside.
In a quart size casserole dish, start layering with vanilla wafers in the bottom.
Next, add sliced bananas. Pour a portion of the custard over bananas.
Repeat layering, ending with custard on top.
Beat egg whites stiff, but not dry; gradually add 1/4 cup sugar.
Beat until mixture forms a peak. Pile on top of pudding.
Bake in preheated 425Β° oven for 5 minutes or until brown.
