Cake should be 1 to 1 1/2-inches thick.

Cut cake into a rectangle that will be 1-inch wider and 1-inch longer than the ice cream brick.

Place cake on a small, thick wooden board.

Beat egg whites and salt until stiff.

Add sugar gradually and beat until mixture is thick, smooth, glossy and stands in firm peaks.

Place very hard brick of ice cream on cake and quickly spread meringue to completely and thickly cover the top and sides of ice cream and cake.

Place in a very hot oven (500Β°) and bake 3 to 4 minutes or until meringue is golden brown.

Remove from oven; immediately loosen from board and slide onto serving dish.

Slice and serve immediately while meringue is warm.
