Put 1 cup of salt to 1 gallon of pickles in water.

Boil 1 gallon of water.

Have pickles in jar; never take them out.

Put salt in the water.

Pour boiling hot water onto pickles and let set for 8 days.

On the eighth day, drain off water; rinse pickles in jar 2 or 3 times (just let water run over them).

Pour clear, boiling water over them and let set for 24 hours.

Drain this off and put 2 tablespoons of alum in 1/2 gallon of water.

Bring to a boil and pour over pickles.

Cover the pickles.

Let this set for 24 hours.

Drain and rinse as before.
