Caramelize 1 cup sugar in heavy iron skillet.

Cook over very low heat until sugar turns to syrup.

While sugar is melting, place other 2 cups of sugar, milk, butter and salt in heavy saucepan.

Bring to boiling point.

Very slowly pour syrup from skillet into other ingredients, stirring constantly.

Be sure to turn heat to low before starting the pouring.

Cook until good firm ball stage (drop a bit of mixture into cool water to test firmness).

Cool slightly.

Add vanilla and pecan halves.

Stir until mixture loses gloss.
