Greek Macaroni Squares(Pastitsio) is an moderately easy dinner. Made with 2 large onions, finely chopped, 1/2 c. butter or margarine, 2 1/2 lb. lean ground beef, 2 (8 oz.) cans tomato sauce and 1/2 tsp. cinnamon, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. In a large frying pan, saute onions in butter until golden; add meat until browned.
Add tomato sauce, cinnamon, salt and garlic; cover and simmer 1/2 hour or until thickened.
Cook macaroni in salted water until barely tender (about 12 minutes); drain and rinse under cold water.
Drain thoroughly.
Butter a 9 x 13-inch pan.
Alternate layers of macaroni, meat sauce and cheese. Dust with cinnamon.
