Put 3 cups sugar and milk into heavy saucepan. Bring to a boil.
In heavy skillet (mother used a cast-iron skillet), add 1 cup sugar. Cook until caramelized, stirring constantly. Add hot syrup to caramelized mixture, stirring constantly. Add butter and cook until reaches soft ball stage (about 240Β°).
Remove from heat and beat until creamy.
