Grate lemon peel on all 4 lemons.

Place grated lemon peel on sugar, then squeeze lemon juice out of all 4 lemons and pour over sugar.

Put butter in double boiler. Add sugar with the lemon peel and juice.

Let sugar melt over hot but not boiling water, stirring, then add beaten eggs, stirring constantly, until it becomes thick. Do not let boil or eggs will become scrambled. Pour into jars and cover at once.
