Blueberry Pinwheel Cobbler

Combine sugar and water in a saucepan; stir well.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, just until sugar dissolves. Stir in vanilla; set aside.
Cut shortening into flour until mixture resembles coarse meal.
Add milk, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened.
Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface; knead 4 or 5 times.
Roll dough into a 12 x 9-inch rectangle.
Spread blueberries over dough and roll up, jelly roll fashion, beginning with long side.
Set aside.
Melt butter in a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking dish.
Cut dough into 12 (1-inch) slices. Place slices, cut side down, in butter.
Pour sugar syrup over slices.
