Cover meat and onions with water.
Cook, uncovered, on medium-high until the water evaporates and down to the fat. Drain.
Add spices and potatoes; crush 4 saltines and add to it (this absorbs the fat).
Cool; pour into unbaked pie shell.
Cover with pastry; prick to allow steam to escape.
Bake at 450° for 10 minutes, then reduce oven to 350° and bake until crust is light brown.
