Split Pea Soup
Split Pea Soup is an moderately easy dinner. Made with 1 ham bone or 1 1/2 cups ham, 16 oz. pkg. split peas, 2 carrots, thinly sliced, 1 medium onion, chopped and 1/4 tsp. whole allspice, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. Perfect for family dinners and special occasions.
In Dutch oven or large kettle over medium heat, heat ham bone, split peas, carrots, onion and 7 cups of water to boiling. Meanwhile, tie allspice, peppercorns and bay leaf in a cheesecloth bag.
Add to ham bone mixture.
Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 1 hour.
Discard spice bag.
Add salt to taste. Remove meat from bone and return meat to soup.
Discard bone. Makes about 7 cups or 6 servings.
