Southern Raised Biscuits
Southern Raised Biscuits is an moderately easy dinner. Made with 1 pkg. active dry yeast, 1 1/2 c. very warm water (105~ to 115~), 4 1/2 c. unsifted all-purpose flour, 2 tbsp. salt and 1 tbsp. sugar, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. Sprinkle yeast over water.
Let stand for a few minutes, then stir.
Sift dry ingredients into large bowl.
Cut in 1/2 cup soft butter.
Add yeast and mix well.
Roll 1/2-inch thick on floured board.
Cut with 2-inch biscuit cutter and place on cookie sheet. Brush with melted butter.
Beat egg yolk and 1 tablespoon water together.
Brush on biscuits.
Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
Bake in preheated hot oven (425Β°) about 10 minutes. Makes about 3 dozen biscuits.
