In a medium bowl, mix flour, salt and baking powder; cut shortening into mixture with two knives until mixture resembles cornmeal.
Stir in warm water until moist.
Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
Knead until smooth, about 5 minutes. Cover dough with plastic wrap or towel for 30 minutes.
Cut dough in half on lightly floured surface, roll dough out, make into balls and then roll each flat like a tortilla.
Fry over medium-high heat until puffy and golden brown.
If they do not puff, oil is not hot enough.
Serve immediately with honey, sugar or preserves. Makes 35 to 40.
