Soak prepared cucumbers in 2 1/2 gallons of water and 2 cups lime for 24 hours.

Rinse several times.

Soak in tap water for 3 hours.

Combine food coloring, 1 cup vinegar, alum and cucumbers with enough water to cover them.

Simmer for 3 hours, drain. Combine the 3 cups vinegar, 3 cups water, red hots, cinnamon and sugar, bring almost to boil.

Pour over the pickles on Monday, let stand 24 hours.

Tuesday reheat and let stand 24 hours.

Repeat Wednesday and Thursday.

Seal on Friday.
