Mother's Brown Bread(Mors Grovbrod)
Mother'S Brown Bread(Mors Grovbrod) is an moderately easy dinner. Made with 1 cake fresh yeast, 4 c. lukewarm water, 1/2 c. molasses, 1 tbsp. salt and 1/2 c. melted shortening, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. Great for entertaining guests or a cozy night in.

Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup lukewarm water; let stand for 15 minutes.
In a large bowl, add 3 1/2 cups lukewarm water, molasses, salt, sugar and shortening.
Add enough flour to make a soft sponge.
Beat thoroughly.
Add remainder of flour to make stiff dough.
Knead dough well.
May add some shortening to kneading surface to help kneading.
Place dough in greased bowl; cover and let rise in a warm place.
When double in bulk, knead again.
Let rise once more, then shape into 4 loaves.
Place in loaf pans.
Let dough rise until loaves are double in size.
