Sift flour, soda, baking powder and salt together.

Gently blend in Crisco with fingertips until thoroughly mixed.

Stir in buttermilk.

(Use more if necessary to make a stiff sticky dough.) Place heaping tablespoonfuls of dough onto floured sheet.

Sprinkle top with flour.

Lightly roll and press into round balls between hands.

With rolling pin, roll flat about 1/4-inch thick.

Drop in center of dough, one heaping tablespoonful filling, fold over and press ends together with fork.

Roll out all dough and fill all pies before starting to fry.

Deep fry in hot skillet of 1/2 Crisco and 1/2 Crisco oil until golden brown, turning once.
