French Onion Bread
French Onion Bread is an moderately easy dinner. Made with 1 pkg. active yeast, 1/4 c. warm water, 1 envelope onion soup mix, 1 tbsp. shortening or salad oil and 6 to 6 1/2 c. sifted flour, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. A crowd-pleaser that never disappoints.
Soften dry yeast in 1/4 cup warm water.
Combine soup mix and 2 cups water; simmer covered 10 minutes.
Add sugar, salt, cheese and shortening; stir.
Cool to lukewarm.
Stir in 2 cups flour; beat well.
Stir in yeast.
Add enough of the remaining flour to make a moderately stiff dough.
Turn out onto lightly floured surface.
Cover; let rest 10 minutes.
Knead until smooth and elastic.
Place in a lightly greased bowl, turning once to grease surface.
Cover.
Let double in warm place, 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours.
