Add yeast to 1/2 cup warm milk and sugar to proof.
Put remaining warm milk, margarine and salt in a large bowl.
Stir in flour, 1 cup at a time, with wooden spoon.
After 3 cups flour, add proofed yeast.
Continue stirring flour in until mix is rather firm, about 4 to 5 cups.
Knead until no longer sticky.
Put in buttered bowl to rise until double, in warm dry place, about 45 minutes to an hour.
