In Luxemburg City, there was a restaurant by the name of Stuff's (pronounced Stoof's) that made this wonderful onion soup. They served it as a first course in a large tureen with the bread and cheese on top.
We always followed it with Coq au Vin, which was a mistake.
We would eat so much of the soup, we could hardly eat the chicken, but we would manage and go away so full we were miserable.
