In mixing bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in 1/2 cup water. Scald 1 cup water, milk, sugar and shortening.

Mix remaining ingredients and let rise 1 hour or until double in bulk.

Punch down and let rise again.

Knead each loaf before putting in pans. Let rise 1 hour.

Bake at 400° for 15 minutes and reduce oven to 350° and bake additional 45 minutes.
