In small bowl, stir together cocoa and boiling water until smooth; set aside.
Heat oven to 350Β°.
Grease and flour 2 (9 x 1 1/2-inch) round pans.
In large mixing bowl, cream shortening, sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy.
Add eggs, beating well. Combine flour, baking soda and salt; add alternately with buttermilk to creamed mixture.
Blend in cocoa mixture.
