Combine 1/2 cup sugar, flour and salt in saucepan; stir in milk.

Cook until thick, about 15 minutes.

Beat egg yolks and gradually add to mixture.

Cook about 5 minutes more.

Remove from heat and add vanilla.

In casserole dish, put layer of wafers and top with sliced bananas.

Pour about half of mixture over bananas, then another layer of wafers, bananas and rest of mixture.

Beat egg whites stiff; add the 1/4 cup sugar and beat to stiff peaks. Put on top of mixture.

Bake top just to brown.
