Blend together sugar, egg and shortening.

Mix together flour, baking powder, soda and cocoa.

Add flour mixture and buttermilk to 1st mixture.

Add 1/2 cup boiling hot water and vanilla. Batter will be very thin.

Bake at 325° in glass pan, at 350° in aluminum pan, 8 x 8-inches, for 25 to 30 minutes.

Double recipe for 9 x 13-inch pan, but bake perhaps a little longer, 35 to 40 minutes or until cake tests done.
