Irish Brown Soda Bread
Irish Brown Soda Bread is an moderately easy dinner. Made with 2 1/2 c. white flour plus an additional tbsp. (needed later to dust kneading surface), 2 1/2 c. whole-wheat flour, 3/4 stick margarine, slightly soft (not directly from refrigerator), 2 tsp. baking soda and 2 tsp. baking powder, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. Preheat oven to 350Β°.
Mix, but do not sift, the white flour together with the whole-wheat flour.
Cut margarine into small pieces and rub into the combined flour until it resembles bread crumbs.
Add in and mix all other dry ingredients (including golden raisins), except the further tablespoon of white flour mentioned for kneading.
Slowly add buttermilk to the mixture with gentle mixing until it becomes a soft dough (about 2 cups of buttermilk will be needed).
