Boil 2 cups of water; pour over dates.
Set aside to cool. In a large bowl, cream the butter, sugar and eggs.
Add date mixture, nuts, vanilla, flour and baking soda.
Mix well.
Pour into 5 well-greased cans (16 ounce vet cans), filling half full. Bake at 300Β° for 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Remove from cans while still warm.
Cool completely.
Slice thin.
Spread with butter or cream cheese.
