Sift together flour, soda, ginger and salt.
Cream shortening until fluffy.
Add sugar gradually, beating well.
Beat in egg; blend with molasses.
Sift dry ingredients into mixture.
Beat thoroughly; stir in water.
Bake in greased and floured 8-inch square pan 40 minutes at 350Β° or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
Remove from pan and cool on rack.
