In 1 1/2-quart saucepan, melt margarine and saute onion until tender.
Stir in bread crumbs, sugar, salt and pepper.
Arrange a layer of tomatoes in 1 1/2-quart casserole.

Repeat layers until all is used, ending with crumbs. Bake, uncovered, in preheated oven at 375Β° for 35 minutes.
