Chocolate-Caramel Layer Squares
Chocolate-Caramel Layer Squares is an moderately easy dinner. Made with 1 (14 oz.) bag caramels, 2/3 c. evaporated milk, divided, 1 (18 1/2 oz.) pkg. regular german chocolate cake mix, 3/4 c. butter or margarine, softened and 1 c. chopped nuts, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. Combine caramels and 1/3 cup evaporated milk in top of double boiler; stirring constantly until caramels are completely melted.
Remove double boiler from heat. Combine dry cake mix, remaining milk, butter and nuts; stir until dough holds together.
1/2 of cake mixture into a greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking
Bake at
6 minutes.
Sprinkle chocolate morsels over crust.
Pour caramel mixture over chocolate morsels, spreading evenly.
Crumble remaining cake mixture caramel mixture.
Return to oven and bake 15 to 18 minutes;
Chill 30 minutes; cut into small bars.
Yields about 5 dozen.
