Cut beef in cubes; coat with flour to which salt and pepper have been added.

Brown, using shortening, in large pan (electric frypan works well).

Add sliced onions to meat until onions are limp, not browned.

Add small amount of soy sauce, bay leaf and enough water to cover beef.

Simmer covered until meat is tender, stirring occasionally and adding water as needed.

Mix flour and water to paste consistency; slowly stir into pan to thicken gravy. This is an excellent company dish, served with either mashed potatoes, noodles, rice or over bread slices if you are in a hurry. May be frozen.

Serves 5 to 6.
