Baked Sauerkraut Wirth
Baked Sauerkraut Wirth is an easy dinner. Made with 2 lb. sauerkraut, washed well and drained, 1 lb. can tomatoes, drained and chopped (reserving the juice), 1 1/4 c. firmly packed dark brown sugar and 4 slices lean bacon, halved crosswise, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. Spread the sauerkraut in a buttered ovenproof serving dish 12 x 9 x 2-inch.
Cover it with tomatoes, including the reserved juice.
Sprinkle the mixture with brown sugar.
Arrange the bacon on top and bake in a preheated oven at 300Β° for 2 hours.
Remove from oven, cut the bacon into pieces and stir it gently into the sauerkraut mixture.
Bake the dish, adding water as necessary to prevent it from drying out for 1 more hour.
Serves 8.
