Army Bread
Army Bread is an easy dinner. Made with 1 qt. flour, 1 tsp. salt, 1 tbsp. sugar, 2 heaping tsp. baking powder and 1 1/2 pt. cold water, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. Great for entertaining guests or a cozy night in.
On the bark of maples and, sometimes, beeches and birches in northern woods, a green broad leaved lichen grows, known as lungwort, liverwort, lung lichen, and lungmoss which works as yeast.
Gather and steep overnight in lukewarm water.
In the morning, add enough flour to make a good batter.
Place sponge in warm place and cover with cloth.
By evening, it will have risen. Leaven dough (save some), rise overnight and bake next morning. Never freeze!
