Cut spareribs into serving-size pieces.

Spread 2 cups sauerkraut in the bottom of a 3 to 4-quart casserole.

Add another layer of 2 cups sauerkraut and repeat remaining ribs, potatoes, apple and onion.

Top with remaining sauerkraut.

Combine brown sugar and water.
