Cream shortening and sugar together, then add molasses and egg and stir.
Sift flour, soda, salt, cloves, ginger and cinnamon; add to creamed mixture and stir well.
Shape dough in small round balls; dip in sugar.
Place 2-inches apart on greased cookie sheet.
Bake at 350° to 375° for 8 minutes (10 minutes for harder cookies).
