Let butter begin to melt in heavy 3-quart saucepan.
Brush sides of pan with melted butter.
Add evaporated milk and sugar. Cook over medium-high heat to boiling, about 8 minutes, whisking constantly to dissolve sugar.
Cook over medium-high heat, whisking frequently to soft ball stage, 236Β°, about 12 to 15 minutes.
Remove from heat.
Add candy wafers, marshmallow cream, walnuts and vanilla; stir until well blended.
Pour into well buttered 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan; cool and cut into squares.
