Red Velvet Cake
A vivid Southern red velvet cake with just a whisper of cocoa and a tang from buttermilk. Tender, lightly chocolaty, and traditionally finished with a snowy cream cheese frosting.

Mix food coloring and cocoa.
Set aside.
Cream shortening and sugar.
Add eggs and color mixture.
Beat for 10 minutes.
Add 1 cup buttermilk.
Slowly add flour, salt and vanilla.
Beat until well mixed.
Mix soda in small amount of water and fold into batter.
Bake in two 9-inch pans at 350Β° for about 30 minutes.
