Quick Butter-Fluff Rolls

Scald milk; add sugar, salt, shortening and soda.
Cool to lukewarm.
Let yeast stand in water for 5 minutes; add to milk mixture.
Add flour to make a soft dough; knead until smooth.
Roll dough out to 1/2-inch thickness.
Cut in strips about 1 1/2-inches wide.
Spread strips with butter and make layers of three; cut in 1 1/2-inch pieces and place, cut side down, in well-greased muffin pans.
Brush tops with melted shortening.
Cover and let rise in warm place until doubled in bulk.
Bake in a hot oven (425Β°) for 15 to 20 minutes.
Yields 3 dozen small rolls.
