Heat milk to scalding.
Pour over bread.
Cool and add the melted butter, sugar, eggs, salt, raisins and spice.
Pour into 1 1/2-quart casserole that has been buttered.
Set the casserole in a pan of hot water 1 inch deep.
Bake at 350Β° until silver knife inserted in pudding comes out clean, about 1 hour.
Serve warm with lemon sauce if desired, or cream.
