Sift together in bowl flour, baking soda and salt.

Add shortening, sugar, egg, vanilla and water.

Beat until smooth. Blend in oats.

Chill for several hours or overnight.

Roll out on lightly floured board to 1/8-inch thickness.

Using a floured, 2 1/2-inch round cookie cutter, cut cookie rounds.

Then use a smaller cutter or sharp knife to cut design in center of half the cookies.

Be sure to remove centers.

Place whole plain cookie mounds on ungreased cookie sheet.
