Prepare meat sauce.
In a 3-quart saucepan, heat olive oil; add chopped onion and saute about 3 minutes.
Add garlic and red pepper; saute 1 minute.
Add ground beef and sausage. Brown meat, then drain off fat.
Add chopped tomatoes, paste, sauce, sugar, salt, pepper, thyme, basil and oregano.
Bring to a lower heat simmer, uncovered, for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
