Put boiling water, vinegar and salt into a large pot.

Bring back to a rolling boil.

Remove from heat.

Put cucumbers in pot and let stand for 5 minutes.

Remove cucumbers with a drip spoon. Pack cucumbers in 9-quart jars.

To the jars add the dill seed, garlic, 1/4 red hot pepper and alum.

Reheat liquid and then pour over cucumbers and seal jars.
