Heat oven to 450Β°.

In large bowl combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt (if desired); using fork, mix well. Using pastry blender, cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Add buttermilk; using fork, mix just until mixture forms soft dough.

Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface. Knead 6 to 8 times to mix thoroughly.

Roll out dough to 1/2 inch thickness.

With floured cutter, cut out biscuits.

Place on ungreased baking sheet.

Bake until golden, about 12 to 15 minutes.
