Dissolve yeast in warm water.

Cut shortening into flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and soda with pastry blender.

Stir in buttermilk and yeast mixture until dough leaves sides of bowl. Dough will be soft and sticky.

Pour dough onto floured surface; roll into ball.

Knead lightly 25 to 30 times.

Sprinkle with flour if dough is too sticky.

Roll it 1/2-inch thick.

Cut with round cutter.

Bake at 400Β° on a greased cookie sheet for about 14 minutes.

Makes about 2 1/2 dozen biscuits.
