Mix together thoroughly the sugar, shortening and egg.
Stir in milk.
Sift together and stir in the flour, baking powder and salt.
Blend in nuts.
Pour into well-greased 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan.
Let stand 20 minutes before baking.
Bake at 350Β° for 60 to 70 minutes (until wooden toothpick thrust into center comes out clean).
Serve warm or cold.
Cut with thin sharp knife to prevent crumbling.
