Turtle Bread
Turtle Bread is an moderately easy dinner. Made with 2 pkg. active dry yeast, 1 1/4 c. warm water, 1 c. warm water, 3 tbsp. sugar and 1 tbsp. salt, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. Perfect for family dinners and special occasions.
Dissolve yeast in 1 1/4 cups warm water.
Stir in 1 cup warm water, sugar, salt, shortening and 3 1/2 cups flour.
Beat until smooth.
Mix in enough remaining flour to make dough easy to handle.
Knead about 10 minutes.
Place in greased bowl.
Let rise about 1 hour.
Divide into 12 pieces.
Cut off 1/4 of each piece. Form large piece into ball for body.
Place on greased baking pan. From small piece, form head, 4 legs and a tail and place along body.
Insert cloves for eyes.
Make crisscross cuts on back. Cover; let rise until doubled about 30 minutes.
Combine egg and cold water.
Brush over dough.
Bake at 350Β° for 12 to 15 minutes or until done.
