In a large saucepan, place shortening, 2 cups water, sugar, raisins, salt and spices.
Bring to a boil, boiling for 3 minutes. Let cool.
Add flour and baking powder alternately to raisin mixture.
Dissolve baking soda in 3 teaspoons water and add to mixture.
Mix in nuts and vanilla.
Pour into two 9 x 5-inch loaf pans that have been greased and floured.
Bake at 325Β° for 1 1/2 hours.
