Split Pea Soup

Coarsely chop the vegetables and add to the boiling water, along with the ham bone and split peas. Cover and cook slowly for about 2 hours.
Remove ham bone.
Put soup through food mill and return to the pot.
Remove ham from bone in small pieces and add to the soup.
Season with salt and pepper as desired.
Serve.
