Southwestern Chili Sauce is an moderately easy dinner. Made with 1/2 c. chili powder, cold water, 1 tsp. salt, 4 c. boiling water and 3 tbsp. shortening, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. A comforting dish that warms the soul.

Make a paste of chili powder and a little cold water; add to salted boiling water with the fat; stir to blend, then simmer to the consistency of tomato sauce for 15 to 20 minutes.
Add garlic. For thicker sauce, add more chili powder.
Makes about 3 cups.
