Preheat oven to 375Β°.
Cream sugar and butter, adding sugar gradually.
Beat in eggs one at a time.
Resift flour along with soda, cinnamon, cloves, allspice and salt.
Add sifted ingredients in 3 parts to the butter mixture, alternately with water or sherry.
Beat the batter until it is smooth after each addition. Stir in fruits.
Drop batter from a teaspoon onto a greased tin. Bake about 12 minutes.
