Grease and flour or line with wax paper 2 (8-inch) cake pans. Make a paste of red cake coloring and cocoa.

Cream the Crisco and granulated sugar.

Add eggs, one at a time, and beat well after each addition.

Add vanilla and the red paste and mix well.

Sift flour and salt.

Add to mixture alternately with buttermilk. Dissolve baking soda in vinegar.

Fold at once into batter.

Do not beat.

Pour into baking pans and bake in 350Β° oven for 35 minutes, or until done.

Spread icing on cooled cake.

Can also be made into cupcakes.
